A woman thanked the ‘lovely couple’ who stopped to help when her car burst into flames at the side of a busy road on Friday evening.
The woman, who does not want to be named, said: “I was driving to my boyfriend’s house along the A66 in South Bank and as I started to slow down to change gear, my gears stopped working, then my accelerator stopped working.
“I noticed someone flashing me from behind, and then all of a sudden black smoke started to come out from the bonnet of my car.

“I pulled off onto the slip road and got out of the car, it was then that it just burst into flames.”
The woman who also had her two hear old Cockapoo in the car with her has said that she ‘dreads to think’ what could have happened if she hadn’t pulled over.

Emergency services were called, and police attended the scene along with two fire engines.
A couple stopped to help her and took care of her dog in their car, whist she was busy with emergency services.
She put out a Facebook post after the incident to try and trace the couple in order to thank them. It said: “I would like to put a post out there and thank the lovely couple who stopped to help me and my dog when my car burst into flames tonight.

“I didn’t get a name, they took Bear in their car and comforted him whilst I was with emergency services.
“Was about 6.30pm. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. There was a lot of traffic and only you guys stopped to help.”
The post gained 169 shares and finally found it’s way to the good Samaritans who said: “Her car completely burst into flames, and she was at the side of the road hugging her dog, no one stopped to help but us.
“So glad they are both safe, we got some gorgeous cuddles with her dog.”
