Car completely destroyed in ‘deliberate fire’

Fire crews in Devon attended two separate incidents today as two cars burst into flames. The first of the incidents happened in Bishop’s Tawton.

Responding fire fighters attended the scene at 7.32am and discovered an abandoned car which had been parked in the gateway to a field. It had reportedly been on fire for some time and was suspected to have been started deliberately.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said the vehicle had been “completely destroyed”. Devon and Cornwall Police were also informed of the incident.

The spokesperson said: “Crews attended an abandoned vehicle on fire in a gateway to a field. On arrival, it was clear it had been a light for some time.

“Crews put the fire out with one hose reel jet, and confirmed the cause as deliberate ignition. The vehicle was completely destroyed.”

“Police were informed.”

Fire crews were alerted to a second incident in Mortonhampstead at 1pm. All occupants in the car were safely cleared from the area.

Crews used one fire appliance from Mortonhampstead before requesting an additional appliance for water from Chagford Fire Station.

A spokesperson said: “Fire control received multiple calls to a car on fire in the Mortonhampstead area. Fire control mobilized one fire appliance from Mortonhampstead.

“Once on scene crews confirmed well light and requested an additional appliance for water. We mobilized this from Chagford.

“Crews confirmed that all occupants of the vehicle were clear of the vehicle which we fully extinguished using two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.”
