A big thank you goes to Malcolm Powell for raising a staggering £ 7,001 for Withybush Hospital from a classic car run in Pembrokeshire.
The 72-year-old from Pembroke Dock has been organizing charity car trips for 40 years
On April 12, 125 classic cars took part, starting from Fort Road in Pembroke Dock and passing the Withybush and Glangwili hospitals, a total of 44 miles.
Malcolm had originally hoped to raise £ 500 but his final total was £ 7,001, including a generous £ 3,225 donation from NFU Mututal’s Pembroke agency and a £ 500 donation from local fuel company Valero.
Malcolm said, “After the year we’ve had, I want to give something back to the NHS. I just sat there and thought what can I do? My granddaughter is a paramedic and I just think the NHS staff are all brilliant people.
“Organizing the run is quite a challenge, but I’m lucky because I have a great team of volunteers and support.”
“The weather was on our side. Only two cars broke down so we consider this a good day.
“A big thank you to everyone who donated, no matter how big or small you made a big difference. I would like to thank Simon Dixon, Roger Griffiths, and Janette Lindsey for their support in raising the fund. Finally, a special thank you to NFU Mutual and Valero for their extremely generous donations. “
Janice Cole-Williams, general manager of Withybush Hospital, said they wanted to say a big thank you to Malcolm, all fundraisers, and everyone who kindly donated money to Withybush Hospital.
She added, “It is amazing to hear that such a large amount is being raised to thank our teams for their work during the pandemic. We will ensure that it is used in such a way that it directly benefits the employees, who have all done and continue to do a fantastic job under the most difficult of circumstances. “
