Floods in London: travel disruption for commuters as roads and stations were closed after “hours of deluge” | News from the UK

Commuters have had delays in getting home after flash floods shut down several London train and tube stations after heavy rains.

Euston train station, one of the city’s largest transport hubs, was closed after the heavy rains on Monday evening.

Heavy rains forced Chalk Farm and Hampstead underground stations to the north of the city and Wimbledon to the south to close.

A Network Rail spokesman said, “The Watford Junction-Euston line has been closed and engineers are on-site testing the line as the water recedes. As soon as this is certain, we will start moving trains again.

“We encourage anyone traveling tonight to check with their train operator or the National Rail Inquiries website for the latest information.”

Flooding problems appear to be concentrated in south-west and north-west London, including districts like Richmond and Kingston.

Videos of flooded streets and flooded vehicles have been posted on social media by people in South Hampstead, West Hampstead, Raynes Park, Friern Barnet, Isleworth and Wimbledon.

A Twitter user posted a video of water pouring down the stairs of the Sloane Square subway station, while images of people swimming in ponds created by the thunderstorms on Primrose Hill have surfaced.

The London Fire Brigade said they had taken more than 1,000 calls related to flooding.

A spokesman for the service said, “We ask people not to walk or drive through the floods. Floods can be contaminated and vehicles can become unstable.

Cars have also been filmed struggling to move through streets that appear to have turned into rivers after several inches of rainwater.

Headquarters Representative.

Stranded.

No trains in or out of Euston due to flooding and a line fire. When was the last time you saw the Euston departure board completely blank ?! I definitely never have.

@CaptTamagochi from the same area warned anyone driving to be “careful” while @lunanana___ posted a video of similar flooding in South Hampstead, adding that they “had never seen anything like it”.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for much of southern England.

The affected area extends from Devon in the west over the entire south coast to East Anglia and north to Cambridgeshire and almost to Bristol.

There are flood warnings for four areas, including Beverley Brook in the southern London borough of Merton, Sutton, Kingston upon Thames, Richmond upon Thames and Wandsworth.
