Heavy rain blocks railway lines and forces the driver to get out of the car

An abandoned car in Glasgow

Torrential rains across Scotland have closed railway lines, flooded roads and resulted in the abandonment of a car after being submerged in water.

A yellow thunderstorm warning will apply for most of Scotland on Saturday and Sunday. The Met Office warning can lead to flooding and power outages.

Traffic Scotland has advised motorists in Glasgow and North Lanarkshire to be careful about surface water.

Network Rail said employees in the twin tunnels at Dalmuir, northwest of Glasgow on the Yoker route, discovered 5 feet of flood water.

The route between Argyle Street and Bridgeton in Glasgow has also been closed due to track circuit failures due to suspected flooding.

The railway company tweeted: “Thanks to our dedicated forecasters and monitoring devices, we are constantly monitoring the weather and its effects on the network in real time.

“Right now there are a number of speed restrictions across the country due to the heavy rain we saw.”

Cars have been seen driving through floods on Glasgow’s Great Western Road while a couple were forced to abandon a car under the Drumchapel Railway Bridge after it went down.

Claire, a local resident, told the PA news agency, “You walked through the water up to your waist. I went to get (a) train and all (were) canceled, so I had to wade home in the rain up to my calves. “
