Man charged after driving a stolen car along Cheshunt railroad tracks and injuring two police officers

A man was charged in connection with an incident involving a stolen vehicle driving along the railroad tracks in Cheshunt.

In addition, two police officers were injured and the railway infrastructure was damaged for several thousand pounds.

At around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 15, Herts police were alerted that a vehicle previously stolen from Braintree, Essex, had entered the county.

The vehicle was in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire and Essex Police officers tried to speak to the driver.

The vehicle then drove away, injuring two officers and damaging several vehicles.

Hertfordshire officials also participated in the search and the vehicle was found abandoned on nearby train tracks in the Windmill Lane area.

Extensive investigations were carried out by officers from the Tactical Resources of the Herts Police Department, which resulted in a man being arrested and charged with multiple crimes.

A barrier was erected near Cheshunt train station

Keiran Francis, 34, of Henniker Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, was charged:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle;
  • Two cases of criminal harm;
  • Driving during disqualification;
  • Driving without insurance;
  • Attack on an emergency worker;
  • Dangerous driving;
  • Unlawfully and maliciously crossing the track of a wagon with the intention of endangering the safety of people traveling or on the track.

He was due to appear on the video link in Hatfield Magistrates Court on Friday, July 30th.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Clawson said, “I want to assure the community that the police will relentlessly pursue those criminals whose actions endanger the safety of the public and the police.

“This manhunt was completed incredibly quickly, in just 13 days, involving specialist officers from Hertfordshire Tactical Resources.

“Thanks to everyone involved for their skills and professionalism during this challenging operation.”
