A pizza deliveryman shot a man who was apparently trying to steal his car, six times in Philadelphia.

The deliveryman, 39, was bringing a pizza order on H Street in the Kensington neighborhood shortly before 7.40pm on Thursday, according to WPVI-TV. That was when he was confronted by an armed man trying to carjack him.

Police said the deliveryman had a concealed carry permit and fired at the 23-year-old suspect. The younger man fired back but missed, according to WPVI.

The suspect was transported to Temple University Hospital in critical condition, the TV station reported.

Thursday’s incident was the second time this month that a would-be carjacking victim shot at a person trying to steal a personal vehicle.

On January 14, a 60-year-old man shot a teenager, 16, in both legs as he was trying to steal his car in the West Mount Airy neighborhood, the Inquirer reporter. More than a dozen shots were fired in both directions and the victim was not injured. The elderly man had a concealed carry permit and did not face charges for shooting the teenager.

Pennsylvania’s largest city has recorded 90 carjackings so far in 2022. The city had 757 carjackings in 2021, up from 404 the previous year, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
