A diner who ran his car engine while delivering a meal order had his vehicle stolen in Leicester last night.
The car was later recovered – but Leicestershire Police have now warned drivers to always lock unattended vehicles.
Keyham Lane officials were made aware of a stolen car yesterday evening (December 6th) and found the vehicle just after midnight (December 7th) today.
Its owner had left the vehicle running and someone was taking advantage of a car with the engine running and the ignition key inserted.
Police tweeted, “Found this stolen car just after midnight.
“The owner delivered fast food but let it go, so his car became take out.
“Always lock your vehicle when it’s unattended.”
The Highway Code says: “You must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running, or let a vehicle engine run unnecessarily while this vehicle is on a public road.”
However, it is permissible to run the engine while the vehicle is stationary in traffic or to diagnose faults.
