Teenage driver rammed into car while police attempted to escape

A TEENAGE driver rammed into another car while trying to escape police on a chase through busy streets.

Mitchell Walters, 19, was already banned from driving when police spotted him in a Ford Mondeo in Queensway, Leigh on Saturday April 17th.

Prosecutor Betsy Hindle told Bolton Crown Court how the Mondeo drove past the police car at high speed at 11:15 a.m. and then didn’t stop when officers ordered it to stop.

The Mondeo accelerated to 60 miles per hour on 30 km / h roads as it steered towards oncoming vehicles. “It overtook vehicles at high speed, prompting other road users to take active measures to avoid colliding with that vehicle,” said Miss Hindle.

“The vehicle eventually climbed onto the sidewalk to overtake a vehicle that was waiting at an intersection, but then rammed into another vehicle that appeared to be in the way.”

The collision ended the chase, but Walters, who had a passenger on board, fled on foot towards Leigh Road.

“There was a short foot chase that asked Mr. Walters to stop, but he only did so when he ran towards the end of an alley and seemed out of breath,” said Miss Hindle.

The court heard that Walters was banned from driving at this point based on the number of points he had accumulated on his driver’s license.

Walters of South Avenue in Leigh pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, prohibited driving, and had no insurance.

Defense attorney Martin Pizzey insisted that Walters, whom he described as “immature”, was fortunate that the incident did not end catastrophically with an injured person.

He added that he had abused illegal substances but now wants to reduce his cannabis use and address his problems.

Judge Graeme Smith sentenced Walters to eight months in prison, was suspended for 18 months and sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid labor and 30 days of rehabilitation.

He was again banned from driving for 12 months.
