The blazing car on the M69’s hard shoulder sets the embankment on fire

A section of the highway embankment caught fire this morning after the flames of a burning car spread and ignite the grass.

Firefighters received numerous reports of a blazing car on the southern stretch of the M69 between the junction with the M1 at Leicester and the junction with the A5 at Hinckley at around 10:20 am today.

The driver had stopped on the hard shoulder and got out of the vehicle.

Firefighters fought the fire that had spread from the car onto the grassy dam.

No one was injured in the incident, but the car was destroyed.

A lane of the highway was closed for a while while the emergency services dealt with the incident.

A spokeswoman for the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We have received a number of reports of a burning car on the hard shoulder of the M69 between the junction of the M1 and A5.

“When we arrived the car was in good condition. The driver had got out of the vehicle. The flames had spread to part of the dam.

“A fire brigade put out the flames. No one was injured in the incident.

“It is believed that the cause of the fire was accidental.”

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: “We received a report this morning at 10:19 am about a car fire on the hard shoulder of the M69 between Junction 2 and Junction M1.

“No injuries were mentioned. The Highways Agency fire department and traffic officials have been looking into the incident. “
