The new Morgan Plus Four CX-T is a rally-ready sports car

There is a five-part underbody protection system, including a front impact protection, an engine protection, a rear chassis protection, a middle part shield and a new rear underbody. The exhaust system with its outlets in the extended rear flanks has been redesigned so as not to restrict the ground clearance.

The CX-T retains the Plus Four’s stock two-wheeler setup and its gearbox is mostly stock, but it uses a BMW xDrive electronic differential – with bespoke software – that offers three driving modes, including full locking of the differential in extreme conditions. It has a shorter final drive ratio than the stock to accommodate the much larger diameter wheels and tires, and the wheel arches have been widened for more clearance.

The CX-T is recognizably based on the Plus Four, although it now has a bespoke composite hardtop and distinctive tubular roll cage and has been heavily modified to maximize baggage and gear capacity. There is also an internal roll cage bolted to the original structure, but despite all the additions, the total weight is less than 1300 kg, a remarkable feat.

The traditionally sloping rear wall of the Plus Four has been replaced by tailor-made side walls and an equipment rack that can hold two spare wheels, several “robust” Pelikan cases, a tool box and two petrol and water containers. All devices have been carefully designed for safe transport, but also for quick release. Wells and his colleagues also design bike racks and roof boxes according to specific instructions from future owners
