A teenager was arrested after a woman was threatened with a knife to get out of her car with a toddler in the back seat.
The woman was barely able to catch the three-year-old boy before the robber sped off this morning (June 19) at 12:10 p.m. on Leamington Drive in Sutton, Ashfield.
She was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car when a man opened her door and asked her to get out. The robber let them take the boy before he got out of the vehicle.
The woman looked after the child in the car while they waited for his mother to return from a house she had just entered.
The 19-year-old was stopped by police and then arrested on suspicion of robbery, dangerous driving and drunk driving.
Detective Constable Adam Penn said, “This was a terrifying and shocking incident. The officers acted quickly and located the vehicle on the way to the A38.
“A brief chase began and the vehicle pulled over to the side of the road and a man was arrested.
“Fortunately, the wife and child are safe and well.
“Nottinghamshire Police take all reports of knife and robbery crimes extremely seriously and continue to work tirelessly to target and bring suspected criminals to justice and to remove knives from our streets.”
Detective Superintendent Mike Allen added, “This was a shameful incident, without thinking about this woman or child, and how terrifying they both must have been.
“I have no doubt that this incident will stay with you and the mother of the child for a long time, all to steal a car.
“Any incident of this type will trigger a quick response from the troops to arrest those responsible.
“In this case, our specialist field support team was on the scene quickly, and now that a teenage boy is in police custody, a team of detectives will do their utmost to ensure that the criminal investigation leads to a fair outcome.”
