Brands Hatch Marshal dies after the race car goes off the track | News from the UK

A volunteer marshal has died after being hit by a car that was thrown off the track during a race at the Brands Hatch circuit.

An ambulance landed on the track after police and paramedics were dispatched to the track near Dartford, Kent at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The car had hit crash barriers and rolled over several times before colliding with the marshals’ post. The condition of the driver was not disclosed.

The accident occurred during a British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) auto championship. The race was canceled for the rest of the day.

Motorsport UK, the governing body of the sport, said it was “deeply saddened” by the accident.

A spokesman added: “The race meeting was immediately suspended and Motorsport UK, together with the organizer, has started a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident. The thoughts of everyone at Motorsport UK go with the Marshal’s family, the organizers of the event and other members of the motorsport community present. “

BARC said in a statement: “On behalf of everyone affiliated with BARC, we are devastated at the loss of one of the amazing Marshal Volunteer Communities who are doing so much to make the sport possible. Our thoughts and best wishes go to the family and friends of everyone involved. The event is expected to continue on Sunday. “

A Kent Police spokesman said police were called after a collision between a car and two people on foot at Brands Hatch.

He said officials were there and investigated without any suspicious circumstances being reported.

Brad Jones had an accident in the British Superbike Championship last week on the same track and was put into a coma.

The driver suffered serious head, chest and pelvic injuries and is staying at King’s College Hospital, London.
