Four Chatham County chase arrested after one stole a WRAL News car to escape authorities

PITTSBORO, NC (WRAL) – The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has confirmed that all four people involved in a high-speed chase in Chatham County as of Saturday have been detained.

Caleb Sheffield, the last person wanted on the case, was taken into custody Sunday morning.

A third man wanted in connection with a high-speed car chase in Chatham County on Saturday is also in custody after stealing a WRAL News car and crashing into a State Highway Patrol car.

WRAL’s Keenan Willard said the man, Marcus Brown, came up to him and photographer Lucas Nelson after their live shot at 11 p.m. and offered cash for a ride to the gas station.

When Willard and Nelson said they couldn’t take him, he jumped in the car and drove off on US Highway 64.

First of all, I’m fine.

One of the two suspects in the Chatham County manhunt just stole my car and collided head-on with a state trooper after a brief car chase.

A State Highway Patrol officer saw the incident and drove after the man.

After about 5 minutes, Brown crashed into a state trooper’s car and was taken into custody.

Nobody was injured in the crash. In the interests of the safety of our intelligence teams, WRAL will not provide any further details about the theft of the car.

The search began earlier Saturday after a soldier chased another vehicle on Highway 64 Saturday morning. The chase ended on the freeway about seven miles west of Pittsboro just before 8:30 a.m.

According to the authorities, four people fled and left the vehicle.

Adrian Lowery, 24, from Jacksonville, Florida, and a minor were arrested Saturday afternoon. Lowery was charged with possession of a stolen weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. Lowery and the minor remained in the Chatham County Detention Center.

19-year-old Brown was charged with escaping to avoid arrest in a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and theft of a motor vehicle.

Sheffield, 19, was arrested on Sunday morning. Sheffield has been charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, possession of a stolen firearm, and resistance, obstruction and delay.

All three men arrested are from Jacksonville, Florida. The authorities did not provide any information about the youth.

A soldier monitored the driver of the vehicle at a speed of 94 mph in a 65 mph zone, resulting in a traffic control. The driver didn’t stop and eventually spun off in the central reservation of the autobahn.

Numerous officers were on the spot on the highway near Hillside Dairy Road on Saturday afternoon. The affected vehicle appeared to be a black Hyundai sedan with Florida tags on it. The focus of the search was in a wooded area next to the motorway.

Soldiers said several weapons were found during the investigation and are being processed with the help of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

A reverse 911 message was distributed to local residents asking them to lock their doors and stay inside while local law enforcement officers look for the men. Authorities also used a helicopter to search the area.

David Smith, who lives in the area, said he “saw more cops out here than ever”.

Smith said he called his wife as soon as she was at breakfast and told her to come home after he got the call from 911.

“We had hoped to be able to do some things outside and didn’t [the kids] play outside and that didn’t happen today, ”said Smith.

On Saturday evening, Marty and Angela Rosenburg said the manhunt was a shock for the people who live in their quiet stretch of land.

“We assume that a cow could run free, but that’s it,” said Marty Rosenburg.

Now the Rosenburgs plan to close their doors and leave guard dogs outside overnight.

The couple said their biggest worry is not knowing how close the search really might be.

“We have outbuildings. All of these courtyards have outbuildings. Wondering if someone is waiting for the dark in your outhouse? So it’s worrying, ”said Angela Rosenburg.

NCSHP is investigating with members of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, the Wildlife Resources Commission, and the Carrboro Police Department.
